Meeting tonight - June 4th - HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!

June 4th, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney

I have no idea if anyone is browsing around the website these days, but if you are, I sent out an email with information about the meeting tonight, the grade levels for next year, etc. Please check your INBOX for it and I’d appreciate a reply so I know you have read it. I’ve heard from a few parents already.

TONIGHT: “American Leadership Academy” information meeting at 7 PM in the multi-purpose room.

I have really enjoyed having your students in my classroom. I hope you all have a marvelous summer. Have your kids read and practice things like “skip counting” (counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, etc.) and have fun.

See you next year!!

Blessings,

Mrs. Abney

It’s hard to believe the school year is coming to a close!!

May 12th, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney

It has been a great year with my sweet and wonderful class. May has been busy so far and we have so much more planned. I try to coordinate many of our “reading comprehension” worksheets with various calendar events that are happening. This month has included Cinco de Mayo and the introduction of The World’s First Postage Stamp. We just finished a unit on insects and will follow up with some details about spiders and still try to visit the dinosaurs before school is out.

I have received so many sweet gifts, cards, treats and flowers for “Teacher Appreciation.” Thanks to all of my students for their thoughtfulness (and for whatever help you gave them).

Going hand in hand with our Insect Unit, we had a special “Guest Author” visit our class on “Reading Day” this week. Cecily Markland gathered the children on the floor and read several “bug books” to them and concluded with the charming little book she wrote, If I Made a Bug.  She left coloring pages for everyone and the most adorable bugs have made their way to my desk and some of them may very well end up on Ms. Markland’s website [looks like I have a bad link for her site: I'll add it in when I get the correct link - sorry].

Today, May 12th, is National Limerick Day. We learned about limericks and tried our hand at a couple of our own. There are some other happenings this month, including tomorrow’s field trip. We are going to the Science Center and Planitarium on May 13th with Mr. Eyre’s class.

Thursday is “National Dance Like a Chicken Day” (believe it or not) and we may get a few wiggles out of everyone ~ particularly those willing to show us their “chicken dances!” Saturday, May 16th is the day Root Beer was invented so on Friday,  May 15th we will be having Root Beer Floats in our classroom.

Monday, May 18th is our last “Writing Day.” We also have book reports due on Friday, May 22nd. (forms will be sent home). Since none of our students were old enough to be chosen for the school Talent Show, we have decided to hold one of our own. So, on Friday, May 22nd, we will have a class talent show which can include anything your child excells at, such as art, as well as singing or dancing, etc. This will take the place of our usual Friday “show and tell.”

NO SCHOOL on Memorial Day, May 25th. Yearbooks will be distributed on Wed,. May 27th and Friday, May 29th will be a half day and the end of our school year.

It has been a pleasure to be your child’s teacher this year. Thank-you very much.

Awesome April

April 14th, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney

Wow, it’s the middle of April!! Testing went well last week. I hope everyone is refreshed after the long Easter weekend. We are on the home-stretch of the school year now. We only have about 6 weeks of school left. Amazing! Where did the time go?

We have spelling bees and geography bees coming up that will mostly involve the older students. There is also the SCIENCE FAIR ~ Thurs, April 30th ~ there is still time for your student to participate. Mr. Eyre has some great links with suggestions and information on his classroom site ~ go to the main Eagle’s Aerie website and click on his link on the left and then select Science Project on the left and you can get lots of great information. He did such a great job I didn’t see any reason to “reinvent the wheel.”

There are some things I really hope to help the students have a handle on before the end of the year and I could use your help. Please practice skip-counting with your children (counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 10’s, etc.) at least. This will speed up their math considerably and help when they do multiplication.

The students worked very hard for the last couple of months earning “tickets” that they will be able to spend at our class party on Friday. The only purpose of this party is to reward their hard work and to have fun! Please do not send a lunch on Friday and I will inform Mrs. Rust, our lunch director, that we will be eating in class. We will have pizza and things that go with it. I could use some help in the classroom and would appreciate it if you could send 2 or 3 dollars to offset the cost of the party. Thanks for your help in advance. It’s so great to have such supportive parents.

We will be briefly learning about two states each day, just going over the basics of where they are located on the map, what the capital is and some interesting highlights. Each of the students received a great USA map from our trucker buddy that we will use to track the states. We will review them alphabetically. We also will be drilling math facts with flash cards and other methods (please feel free to reinforce this at home) and we will be reviewing and introducing phonograms and spelling words in class.

You have AWESOME children and it continues to be my pleasure and priviledge to teach them. Please feel free to contact me by email or phone if you have any questions or concerns: jimanie@cox.net or 480-213-7303

Thank you!!

March ~ What We’ve Been Up to and What’s Coming Up!

March 9th, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney

Things we’ve done recently ~

We had a fun and successful fieldtrip the last week of February to the Rock & Mineral Museum in Phoenix ~ thanks to those who helped out.

It’s hard to believe that the first week of March has FLOWN by! We had a lot of fun last week remembering Dr. Seuss as it was his birthday March 2nd, which was also a Reading Day. Mr. Gjersted has been coming to our class for the last several reading days and is reading the students a chapter book in Braille.

All week we have read Dr. Seuss books to each other and done worksheets pertaining to his books. We even had a brief “Dr. Seuss Birthday Party” at the end of Reading Day, March 2nd.

A fun time was had by those who attended the “Family Feud” Game Night on March the 5th!

Monday, March 9th~ We had a Writing Day and also Tim, the school “Trucker Buddy” stopped by with his rig. He answered questions in the classroom and then let the students climb up into the cab of his semi and look around.

Things that are coming up ~

Eagle’s Aerie Spring Concert is this Thursday, March 12, at 7:00pm

SPRING BREAK: Monday, March 16th - Friday, March 20th

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be conducted on Wednesday, March 25 & Thursday, March 26Both days will be “Early Dismissal” at noon.  Please contact the office at (480) 988-3212 to schedule a conference. Also please make arrangements for your children so that it is a conference strictly between parents and the teacher. Thanks.

We have a marvelous class with many interesting and capable students who have blended together beautifully which makes for an exciting learning experience in our classroom.

Colonial Balls & the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum

February 24th, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney
Friday night’s Colonial Ball was a fun time for the students to dance the Virginia Reel that they have been practicing and to dress up like Early Americans. We had only a few families from our class attend but we had a great time. My husband and I brought our 3 year old granddaughter with us and she was thrilled to attend her first “Ball.” She even wore her “princess dress’ like the examples the kindergarten class showed us in opening ceremonies last week. She met Miss Boltz and her neice and she got to “dance with a boy,” which she made very clear to us was her wish. We told her she could dance with grandpa but no, she wanted to “dance with a boy.” She made several friends that night.

REMEMBER:

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26th is our FIELD TRIP to the “Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum.” Please be sure to have your student to school on time WITH A SACK LUNCH (NOT A LUNCH BOX or LUNCH BAG) but a PAPER BAG lunch that ALL OF IT CAN BE THROWN AWAY when we finish eating. Thank you to those who have volunteered to join us. It should be quite interesting and our class will get a little kit to bring back to school to help us study more about gems and minerals.
It’s a pleasure to have your children in my class. They are all wonderful!!! It’s been a great month. Thank you!

February Update

February 12th, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney

We are almost half-way through February. Where does the time go? Today is Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. We have been studying about him all week and the students have made several journal entries about our 16th president.

Yesterday was Thomas Edison’s birthday and we have also been talking about him in class and yesterday we viewed the educational movie, “Young Tom Edison.” We learned many fun and interesting things about his early years. Afterwards, the students filled out a “Video Response Form” which is very useful in finding out what they learned and how much they enjoyed the movie.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY13 ~ Class Valentine’s party ~ We will have a short party after lunch on Friday where the children can exchange valentines and eat some treats. Class lists were sent home on Wed. Please be sure your student includes everyone in their card giving.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16 ~ NO SCHOOL ~ President’s Day (It would have been a reading day and we encourage your student to do some extra reading on this day if possible).

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17 Field Trip Permission slips and money are due.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20 ~ First Lady’s Colonial Ball ~ 7PM in the Multi-purpose Room. This is a FAMILY DANCE and all of your family members are invited. We hope to see many people in some sort of costume of the Colonial Era (long skirts/dresses for the girls ~ the boys can wear knee-high white socks up over a pair of knee style pants or whatever you can come up with). If you are unable to create a costume, then you and your students may wear what would be considered “nice Sunday attire” and when all else fails ~ the school uniform is ALWAYS appropriate… however, for this ocassion, any girls in uniform need to make it a jumper or a skirt as no pants are allowed for the girls to this event. Thanks for your help in this and we hope you have fun coming up with a costume if at all possible.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23 ~ Day after George Washington’s birthday. We have already spent considerable time on President Washington at the beginning of the school year but we will be reviewing the things we learned.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26 ~ FIELD TRIP to the Rock & Mineral Museum ~ students must have a SACK lunch ~ NO LUNCHBOXES, please. We want to be able to just throw everything away. Thanks.

January Recap

February 10th, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney

January went by so quickly. We had a wonderful experience here at Eagle’s Aerie with the Chinese exchange students. Between their visit and the Chinese New Year, our class spent quite a bit of time studying China and their traditions. We even did some math problems using Chinese characters.

Earlier in the month the school held the Clifford Memorial Campfire. Mr. Eyre had his telescope out and there was a great bonfire going and yummy hot chocolate.

The students had a wonderful time on the all school hike. They were so well-behaved and we appreciate our parent/grandparent volunteers!

Orienteering Day ~ The entire school joined in on “Orienteering Day” on January 30th. We prepared for this by studying about maps and directions. One of the events was to follow the compass directions to one of several “hidden treasures” around campus. Our class found one of the treasures and everyone in our class received a free snack at lunch that day for our efforts.

Cluture Charm

January 22nd, 2009 . by Mrs. Abney

Chinese teacher Sun, Wei and Mrs. Abney

Some of you may know that we have been hosting a teacher from China in our home this week. She teaches at a high school in Beijing. Her name is Sun, Wei and she is 27 years old.

We really had no idea what to expect. She and nine of her students are here for 10 days visiting our school. Each of the students is being hosted by a family from the school except for one who is staying with friends of a family from the school. They are all extremely polite and sweet, eager to participate in typical American high school life.

It has been so delightful to have Sun, Wei stay here with us. She is very charming and her English is extremely good. We have not had any trouble communicating. A few times we each had to try a few other ways to explain something but in the end we understood each other. She teaches Chinese. At first I thought that was odd and then I instantly remembered all the English classes I have taken in high school and college and it made perfect sense.

Sun, Wei chose an American name to go by, Karen, but I enjoy using her Chinese name. She arrived Sunday night, visited briefly with us and being very tired from her journey, went to bed early. She has been riding to and from school with me and spends her day either with her students or visiting other classes and answering numerous questions from our students. Since Monday was a holiday, a field trip to the Science Museum and the Diamondback Stadium was planned for the Chinese students. I picked her up afterwards and she attended her first “family picnic” at the park. Some of our family members got together for fun and ham sandwiches and all that goes with it. Sun Wei got sandwiched out that day as she also ate her first peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I packed for her field trip and then ham sandwiches at the picnic. She and all of her students are “only” children, as is the current custom of China because the government is concerned about their large population. She seems to enjoy seeing photos of and hearing about our large family.

We have had lots of laughs while she has been here. Yesterday was the “All-School Hike” up South Mountain at Fat Man’s Pass. We also went to a “Teacher’s Party” at our local Barnes and Noble yesterday after school. I won 3 prizes, including a globe of the world, by being the first to answer questions about children’s literature. Sun, Wei won one of the free raffle prizes and when we got home, she told Jim, “I didn’t have to answer any questions for my prize. I’m lucky.” Afterwards we went to Ocean Blue and tasted almost every flavor of frozen yogurt they offer. She had never tasted any before. She graciously treated me to a cup of yogurt once we decided on our favorites.

Tuesday night we stopped at “Moki’s Hawaiian Grill” for dinner and she seemed to like the food and last night we picked up take-out at “Panda’s Express”. She laughed when she told me how one of our students asked one of her students if they ate at “Panda’s.” The Chinese student misunderstood the question to be: “Do you eat Pandas?” He answered, rather alarmed, “No! We do not eat Pandas. They are protected.”

Tonight I will fix a typical American meal and she will have several more opportunities to eat what we eat while she is here and she will also cook for us one night. There are several things I have thought would be fun to do with her here but she is still struggling with jet lag and we were told not to do things that were very different from our normal routine so they can experience life in America.

Last night when we got home, Jim was already home and the door was locked. She went to open the door, found it locked and looked a little surprised at me so I couldn’t resist and as I unlocked the door, I said, “Jim is scared.” She got my joke and laughed. In fact, we have made several jokes together and have understood them well. After dinner we watched “American Idol.” Sun, Wei was familiar with it and enjoyed watching it with us. She has been very respectful of us, our home, our belongings and has been the perfect guest. She has bowed her head with us when we have prayed over our food. The first time I prayed over a meal, she looked at me and said, “You are thankful.”

Tonight we will attend a benefit concert at our school, put on by staff and students but the star of the concert is Mr. Gary Gjersted, one of our music teachers, who is also blind. When I asked her if she noticed one of our teachers was blind, she said she had. I went on to say that he plays the piano beautifully to which she responded thoughtfully, “Oh, yes, God is fair. He takes his sight but gives him the piano playing.”

We have found, which I think is always the case with people meeting for the first time (no matter where they are from), that we are more alike than we are different. I thought of several things to call this blog entry from “Culture Shock” to “Cultures Collide” but none of those would have been accurate. Yes, I think “Culture Charm” is the best title. I know she has enjoyed her stay thus far; she is always taking pictures and we have enjoyed her. We have become good friends and how charming is that? Very!!

Bill of Rights Skit

December 15th, 2008 . by Mrs. Abney

Today was “Bill of Rights Day” and our class performed a skit about the 1st amendment. The students did a great job and Mrs. Hale sent our class a thank you note telling us how much she enjoyed it. We had a lot of fun putting it together. Thanks to all who participated. Today was also “Writing Day” and we not only did some writing exercises, but we also made Get Well cards for William. We look forward to his speedy recovery so he can join us.

School Christmas Concert

December 11th, 2008 . by Mrs. Abney

The Christmas Concert was a great success!! I was so proud of our class members and how nice they all looked and how well they sang. It was fun to be there and watch them all.

The year is winding down. We will have a class party and I will include details once the class and I decide just what those details should be.

Again, it was a great concert and I’m so glad so many of you could participate. We are sorry that William Whitlock has missed so much school the last two weeks and wish he could have been there too. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. I hope you will join me in your own way.
